| Zebra Technologies Begins Volume Production of EPC-Compatible RFID Printer/Encoder Zebra's R4Mplus UHF Model Ready for the 'Year of the Pilot' February 4, 2004 VERNON HILLS, Ill., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Zebra Technologies (Nasdaq: ZBRA), a global leader in delivering on-demand printing solutions for business improvement and a pioneer in the targeted adoption of radio frequency identification (RFID) in the global business marketplace, today announces that it has released its Electronic Product Code (EPC) compatible RFID printer/encoder, the R4Mplus, for full production. Zebra was the first company to introduce an EPC compatible printer/encoder when it demonstrated the R4Mplus in September 2003 at the EPC Symposium in Chicago. Since then, the R4Mplus has been involved in numerous customer pilots, field tests and demonstration projects. "Customer experience in real-use environments has enabled us to engineer our printer and media solutions to ensure smart label performance and quality," said Bob Cornick, Zebra's vice president and general manager of RFID solutions. "With the R4Mplus now in full production, we can meet the demands of the market while giving our customers the confidence they need to initiate their EPC pilot programs." A member of EPCglobal, and a technology sponsor of the former Auto-ID Center at MIT, Zebra is playing a leading role in the development of RFID "smart label" technology, standards and applications for supply chain and business improvement programs designed to help suppliers to the U.S. Department of Defense, Wal-Mart and other retailers meet the RFID "EPC compliance" labeling requirements set to take effect in January 2005. As a pioneer and leader in RFID printing/encoding technologies, Zebra has been researching and developing RFID technologies for more than eight years and was the first company to produce an integrated, on-demand RFID printer/encoder -- the R140 -- nearly four years ago. Zebra's popular R402 desktop model followed in 2002. According to a recent AMR Research Alert ("Zebra Technologies Makes RFID Tags Beep," Dec. 03, 2003), "Zebra has solved a major obstacle for manufacturers that want to seamlessly integrate RFID tag application at the point of packaging." Zebra's long-standing leadership in delivering compliance labeling solutions that address the needs of consumer packaged goods suppliers, retailers and logistics companies is further bolstered by the support of world class solution partners such as Manhattan Associates, RedPrairie, SAP, Alien, and Matrics. "We have worked with Zebra Technologies in several capacities -- as a supplier to our RFID lab, as partners for client implementations, and as valuable co-presenters for our RFID workshops," says Susan Rider, RedPrairie executive vice president. "In all cases they have been very professional, knowledgeable and great to work with. We consider Zebra Technologies a key partner for our RFID initiatives." The R4Mplus is the automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) industry's first UHF EPC Class 1 (Alien Technology) RFID printer/encoder designed to deliver smart labels that meet new RFID compliance labeling specifications for supply chain applications. Zebra also will produce a Class 0 (Matrics) version of the R4Mplus. For more information on the R4Mplus call +1 800 423 0442, or visit Zebra's RFID Web site at http://www.rfid.zebra.com .
